WOW!
After 108 years of waiting, the Cubs finally won the World Series. The energy and drama was very real. After a season with the best record in baseball, it took all seven games and an extra inning to make it theirs. Good for them. Great joy was obvious in each of the players who finally put to rest that pesky old Billy Goat of a curse. These guys are even good enough to repeat. That would be another great stat for the history books.
All good things ...
I will confess. I did not stay up until the early morning to witness the moment. As the 8th inning came to a close and a tie, I was too tired to carry on. I went to bed knowing that the mystery of the outcome would greet me when I woke. After all, I'm a fan, just not a fanatic.
So the wonderful news that the Cubs have finally put an end to their drought came to me when I woke. The alarm did it's usual duty. I obeyed. Rolling over, I grabbed my iPhone and tapped it to life. The first few taps led me to the final score. Cubs win! The score was 8 to 7. In ten innings too. I missed all the drama. I was okay with that.
I'm a Chicago boy. I grew up in the Lincoln Park area, not far from Wrigleyville. In my early 20's I had an apartment in Wrigleyville, barely three blocks from the field. I lived close enough that I could hear the crowds roar when something good, or bad even, happened. It was a great area to live. Still, I wasn't a fan of giving up my coveted parking spot to accommodate an uncaring Cubs fanatic.
Regardless, I am Chicago bred. I was a fan of the zoo ... Lincoln Park and the Bulls, Bears and Cubs. In 1985 we won the Super Bowl with unwavering dominance. In the 90's the Bulls owned the NBA with two "three-peats". That was fun! Somewhere in there, the White Sox won as well. Now we get to add the world champion Chicago Cubs. They had the best record in the majors. They advanced through the playoffs to the World Series. Then they had to fight hard to win it. Fighting on through 7 games and an extra inning to get it.
I'm not a fanatic, but I am a fan. Well done Cubbies. Congratulations and thanks!
