Do you remember
Taking breathing lessons
When you were a child
I don't either
Guessing though
Teacher said your life
Depended on it
One of several important
Lessons of living
Did you goof around
Were you the class clown
Sitting in the corner
Did you focus on the lessons
Inhale exhale inhale exhale
Sounds all to simple
Good teacher
Bad teacher
We all figured out
That lesson of life
Before we were born
Breathe in gently and hold
Relax and embrace
Your moment of life
Exhale ever so slowly
It’s not a race
There is no finish line
Maybe an end
No medals for position
Day after day
Hour after hour
Moment after moment
You were a good enough student
Remember your anger
When just a little child
So strong once
You held your breath
"I'LL SHOW YOU!"
You screamed to everyone
"DON'T WANT TO ANY MORE!"
Holding and holding
I can stop breathing
Seconds tick by
Slower and slower
Beginning to shake
Turning clammy of skin
Blues finding the edges
Holding your breath
Then you black out
So much for the plan
You had breathing lessons
Class is in session
You breathe once again
The child cries
Angry still now embarrassed
Yet a very good student
Breathe in breathe out
It just ends up that way
You can’t choose
One or the other
When it’s real and true
It finds its way
It goes on
Day after day
Month after month
Year after year
Do you remember
Taking "how to love" lessons
When you were a child
I don't either
Think it's a bit like
Breathing lessons ...
