who am i
how did i
come to be the me
that i am this day
that i was yesterday
that i may become
tomorrow
who am i
i am my father
not all of him
surely parts
pieces and thoughts
elements of the past
as he is gone
having expired
long ago
like an overdue book
was there choice
even thought
over what to take
what to leave
to forget
forget and bury
with him
or inside of me
who am i
i am my mother
bits and pieces
same as my father
just as with him
she is also gone
long since
still within me
deep inside
with those pieces
of her mother and father
together with my father's
they are not here
yet they are all here
immortal in me
remembrances of the good
awareness of the bad
what stuck
what didn't stick
who am i
i am my brothers
and my sisters
all of them
still with us
but far away
in so many ways
away yet here
bits and pieces
of choices made
conscious
unconscious
knowing
unknown
who am i
i am my friends
their jokes
and ideas shared
conversed in thought
within my space
laughter and tears
and hugs and strength
who am i
i am the stranger
with hello's shared
glances across the road
shared with the homeless
who sang with grace
for thanks
for the sharing
who am i
i am my son
and my daughter
as they are me
bits and pieces
of their choices made
i am my lovers
for all that we shared
imperfect perfection
of precious moments
that were ours
i am all those
them and others
who entered me
through sight and sound
touching and smelling
with laughter and tears
who am i
will you take a part of me
for good
or for not
bits and pieces
of choices made
conscious
unconscious
let me also
be immortal within you
and within those who you touch
