Another Day

Originally written on December 3, 2011.

I died last night
Sensed it just before
It happened
A horrific crash
So it was quick
In a not so quick way
And violent
As the car flipped
Tumbling
End over end over side
Careening off of this and that
It was a big mistake
Realized too late
Somewhere in the middle
Of a pirouette
Fast outside
Slow motion within
No turning back now
What’s done is done
And it's taking forever
Body was strapped in
Seat belts working
Airbags deployed
Head snapping
In a wicked gyration
As my neck muscles
Failed me
Too weak
To compensate for those forces
My arms floating
Like it's Zero-G
Then it all stopped
Instantly silent
There was that last gasp
Felt my heart stop
Missing that beat
Another miss
I let out a scream
Then I woke up
To a cold sweat
Sheets drenched
Shaking
I’m frozen to the bone
Into the darkness
Of the still night
Grasping my chest
It’s still beating
I’m still here
I have another day
